Fitness Motivation Ideas for the Holiday Season

Fitness Motivation During the Holidays

The holiday season can be one of the toughest times to stay motivated to keep up with your fitness routine. We are often caught up with travel, shopping, cooking, etc. Keep a list handy of the things that keep you motivated. Post it on your fridge or your bathroom mirror. Everyone has different things that motivate them. Here are a few fitness motivation ideas that work for me.

Remember how you feel after a workout
Come on, you know you feel better AFTER a workout. Remind yourself that even a 20 minute brisk walk can shake off the blahs and re-energize you for the rest of your day.

Make your workouts FUN!
If your typical workouts are feeling boring or like too much of a chore during the holidays, you need to mix it up and find something that is fun for you. I love to hike in the fall so I am getting out more often and skipping the gym. My kids and I have also discovered the new version of Just Dance for Wii. It’s a great workout and really fun! What exercise is fun for you?

Find Success Stories
Success stories of others can be incredibly inspirational. You can find them online and in many magazines like Self, Prevention, etc.

Reward Yourself
After you exercise for a week, give yourself a non-food reward. Consider a new piece of clothing, a comfy scarf, or a new purse.

Stress Relief
Remind Yourself that Exercise Reduces. Wound up after a long day of shopping? Get out and work off that stress. It makes a world of difference.

Keep an exercise journal or calendar
Tracking your workouts can be extremely rewarding and motivational. When you reflect back on a week and see the workouts recorded, you’ll feel inspired to do more.

Keep Motivational Quotes Handy
I like to print them out or put them on my computer desktop. In addition to the graphic at the top of this post, here are a few of my other favorites:

  • Feel the Fear and Go For It Anyway!
  • 30-60 minutes of being uncomfortable is better than being uncomfortable your entire life.
  • You are a work in progress. You’ll get there a little at a time, not all at once.
